The Civil Practice of The Legal Aid Society is seeking an experienced and talented lawyer with a deep commitment to public interest practice and policy to join a dedicated citywide team of managers, staff attorneys, social workers, supervisors and support personnel as a Supervising Attorney in the Civil Practice's Bronx Neighborhood Office (BNO) where they will supervise BNO's Foreclosure Prevention and Home Equity Preservation Unit. This unit provides comprehensive legal services to homeowners and challenges predatory lending and real estate abuses through affirmative litigation.The Supervising Attorney will be responsible for mentoring the Unit's four attorneys (including an attorney specializing in trust and estates whose responsibilities are city-wide) and one paralegal case handler, represent LAS at coalition meetings and with elected officials, assist with grant management and development, and guide the overall direction of the Unit. The BNO Supervising Attorney will also coordinate with the Queens Neighborhood Office's Foreclosure Prevention Unit's Supervising Attorney and will provide supervision of that unit when necessary.ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
General ResponsibilitiesSupervise and mentor staff attorneys, paralegals and volunteers, including developing staff members' skills and knowledgeManage on a day-to-day basis the work of staff attorneys and paralegal in the Bronx Neighborhood Office including holding weekly team meetings, conducting regular individual case reviews, reviewing legal papers, managing staffing changes, and handling staff schedulesMonitor and maintain a high standard of representation and client serviceFoster and encourage teamwork and communicationReinforce and maintain staff accountabilityAssist with client representation in state and federal court proceedingsDevelop impact and / or affirmative litigationAnalyze legal issues, develop legal strategy and supervise the implementation of legal strategiesCoordinate intakeMaintain a reasonable individual caseload, as time permitsParticipate in practice-wide management discussions and decision-making and attend management trainingsAssist with the development, funding, and implementation of grants, including the preparation of grant reports and attending funders' meetingsRespond to client, community and staff concernsParticipate in citywide and statewide coalition meetings and task forces, including developing and leading new initiatives on legislative and policy mattersDevelop and maintain community support and relationships with community-based organizations, advocates, government agencies, elected officials and the courtsConduct community education, training and outreach and promote the work of the office, the foreclosure prevention practice and the Civil PracticeConduct off-site intake, including during evening hoursTeam Development and SupervisionSchedule employee hours, assign work, approve time off and remote work schedule requests following the guidance of LAS policy and proceduresAttend management meetings, participate in management trainings, and utilize current employment policies, practices and guidance as provided by management and Human ResourcesConduct management and supervision practices that affirmatively support equity and inclusion in the workplaceSupervise direct reports in setting performance standards, provide routine feedback as well as coaching / counseling, and issue disciplinary action as neededIdentify and provide training and development opportunities and ensure mandatory trainings are completedProfessional Development and other duties as assignedParticipate in continuous professional developmentContinuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environmentOther duties as assignedQUALIFICATIONS
Required qualifications :Admission to the NYS BarMinimum of five years of legal practice preferredExperience in foreclosure prevention work, including in Supreme Court and where applicable federal courtPreferred qualifications :Grant-writing and fundraising experience preferredCommitment to exploring alternative approaches for legal practiceAbility to work in and value a collaborative team modelKnowledge in other practice areas within civil legal services practice a plus but not requiredProficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not requiredKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The salary range represents a good faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role. The actual salary offered may vary depending on many factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.Salary Range : $99,444 - $163,507The Legal Aid Society offers a generous benefits package including health insurance, paid vacation, disability, and life insurance, and more.HIGHER EDUCATION AND LOAN FORGIVENESS
