ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The California Domestic Workers Coalition [https://www.cadomesticworkers.org/] (CDWC), a fiscally-sponsored project of Center for Empowered Politics Education Fund, is a coalition of grassroots domestic worker organizations and their supporters from the labor, faith, domestic employer, women and other grassroots communities, who are working to advance the rights of domestic workers. In California, there are approximately 300,000 domestic workers.  We have come together as a statewide network to build the leadership and political power of domestic workers and to ensure that statewide laws and agencies protect domestic workers. We work to inspire all Californians to uphold the dignity of domestic workers inside and outside of our homes.


POSITION OVERVIEW

The Communications Director will initially report directly to the Interim Executive Director and transition to the Deputy Director of Programs and Campaigns when that position is filled. The Communications Director oversees CDWC’s external communications strategy to elevate our public presence and deepen base-building efforts through high-impact, creative content and storytelling across all platforms.


RESPONSIBILITIES

* Lead Communications Strategy (35%)

* Lead the development and implementation of the coalition’s communications plan, core messaging strategies, and powerful strategic storytelling by centering the voice and leadership of domestic workers and ensuring alignment on strategy and direction with the CDWC Leadership Team.

* Collaborate with movement and advocacy partners, campaigns and policy committees within the coalition, and staff teams to develop and lead communications strategies to win legislative and workers’ rights campaigns.

* Oversee CDWC brand and content production to ensure quality and consistency of identity, narrative, tone and personality through the media and across all channels (website, social media, email, mobile, video, print and in-person). 

* With the communications team, develop and manage cultural collaborations that focus on storytelling and narrative building through different creative mediums, such as film or podcasts, and through visual and performance art.

* Design earned media and press strategy, ensuring the communications team has the direction, resources, and support needed to build media relationships, respond to inquiries, and secure impactful coverage of coalition campaigns.

* Strengthen movement building alliances with other coalitions, allies, communications partners, and organizations, to advance shared vision, coordinate messaging, cultivate solidarity, and amplify domestic worker voices and leadership.

* Staff Management and Organizational Leadership (35%)

* Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team (staff and consultants) through practicing equitable, sustainable, and results-driven management 

* Directly manage the Storytelling and Media Specialist, Social and Digital Media Organizer, and Cultural Organizer (to be hired) 

* Assess and determine future staffing needs and structure in alignment with leadership team

* Lead all hiring, onboarding, staff development, and performance management for the communications team

* Ensure quality and consistency of all public facing communications; act as final approver for content, copy, and design, and provide ongoing constructive feedback to staff.

* Develop the skills of staff and support them to do their best work; Bring an equity and inclusion lens to ensure everyone on your team can succeed and thrive 

* Develop annual communications goals, workplans, and content calendars,  including digital performance goals, online-to-offline organizing, earned media, storytelling and cultural programming, and worker leadership development.

* Field and prioritize requests from other teams across the organization; Collaborate effectively to ensure timely and strategic digital and print campaigns, as well as support for the needs of other departments

* Participate in the Managers Circle, providing insights on strategic decisions and collaborating on various issues as they arise

* Materials Development & Outreach Strategy  (20%)

* In collaboration with the Domestic Worker Education and Outreach Program (DWEOP) staff team, communications and legal consultants, and designers, lead the development, updating, and approval processes for all Know Your Rights and other public facing materials. 

* Oversee materials distribution strategy, ensuring appropriate quantities of high-quality materials are available when and where they are needed. 

* Collective staff team responsibilities (10%)

* Provide staffing support for Coalition meetings, mobilizations and other activities, including and not limited to: providing language interpretation for smaller groups, translating documents, tech support, note-taking, and timekeeping.

* Facilitate agenda items, relationship-building activities and break out groups.

* Take on day-of activity roles that may or may not reflect primary areas of work.

* Build relationships with Coalition members.

* Participate in all meetings including bi-weekly all-staff meetings and bi-weekly Steering Committee prep calls and meetings. Participation may include creating agendas, facilitating, tech support, note-taking, and timekeeping.





REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Minimum of 10 years experience in developing and implementing communications strategy at organization(s) with statewide or national reach to win movement-building campaigns for low-wage workers, immigrants and communities of color.

* Strategic narrative and storytelling skills: ability to frame, amplify, and uplift our work and that of our partners in a way that inspires, educates, and engages our base to take action. 

* Experience in using data (e.g. website traffic, social media engagement, fundraising numbers) to drive decision-making, optimize digital strategies, and improve overall performance.

* Skilled in crafting compelling content across media and digital platforms, with ability to learn, internalize, and incorporate the CDWC voice.

* Demonstrated success in securing media coverage, from formulating impactful press materials to building media relationships.

* Ability to guide and teach newcomers to communications work and help others integrate communications into their work (such as organizing or development).

* Demonstrates inclusive, collaborative leadership by engaging diverse perspectives, building consensus, managing conflict constructively, and creating an accountable, supportive environment where staff can grow and thrive.

* Demonstrates a strong equity lens, understanding how race and other identities shape experiences and outcomes; identifies inequitable systems and practices, supports organizational learning and accountability, and reflects on the role of identity in leadership and decision-making.





PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Bilingual; Spanish, Tagalog, Nepali, and Cantonese are commonly spoken in the Coalition and support the cultural relevance of communications plans and messaging

* Experience developing and managing organizational and/or program-specific budgets. 

* Experience with administering government contracts. 


WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is a hybrid remote position based in either the San Francisco Bay Area (preferred) with regular visits to both CDWC office locations in Oakland and SF or in the Los Angeles area with regular travel in Southern California and the Bay.  Able to work on a computer including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; able to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Must be able to stretch, bend, kneel, twist, squat, reach above or below the shoulder, push, grasp, and lift up to 48 pounds. Able to walk, drive, write, stand, and sit.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS

This is a full time position. This position is 40 hours per week. The salary range is $90K - $97K depending on experience.
